Missing Teeth | Oxfordshire & Hampshire
No one likes a missing tooth! Large gaps between your teeth not only look unsightly but can alter your bite and increase the strain on surrounding teeth. Luckily dental bridges can solve the issue. Bridges are ideal for people who only have one or two teeth missing and do not want a denture.
At Imogen Dental, we also offer several options from all-ceramic or all-porcelain and porcelain fused to metal bridges.
What Is A Dental Bridge?
Dental bridges replace one or more missing teeth, by fixing the replacement teeth to the surface of the natural teeth each side of the gap - to bridge the gap. They may also be fitted to crowns at each side of the bridge. They can help correct bite issues and prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position into the space.
Bridges are usually used where there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth.
They can be made from metal, porcelain or a combination of both. The colour can be matched to the rest of your teeth to ensure they blend in and look natural.
Why Do I Need A Dental Bridge?
- Preventing your remaining teeth from moving out of the correct position.
- Re-adjusting your bite to properly distribute forces while chewing.
- Maintaining the shape of the face.
- Restoring your pronunciation and speech.
- Restoring your ability to chew properly.
- Restoring your smile.
What Are The Types Of Dental Bridges?
1. Implant-Supported Bridges
As implied by the name, these dental bridges use dental implants as opposed to metal frameworks or crowns. Usually, one implant is placed surgically for every missing tooth, and these implants support and hold the bridge in place.
These dental bridges are often used for restoring teeth like molars and premolars as they are the strongest system. However, using too many implants can lead to implant failure or rejections.
2. Composite Bridges
If you’re looking for an affordable and easy solution for replacing one or two teeth, composite bridges fit the bill. They are made and installed in a single visit by placing the composite bonding>material directly into the tooth cavity.
An additional reinforcing wire or Ribbond can be used to provide more strength to the composite bridge. However, they are considered temporary and can be used by people with periodontal disease.
3. Maryland Bridges
They are commonly referred to as winged bridges or resin-bonded bridges that are designed with plastic teeth. The metal frame is bonded to the existing anchor teeth and is used as a fortifying system. This system is efficient for the front teeth or incisors and canines.
Your dentist will make minimal adjustments to the contour of the abutment teeth making it cost-effective and easy. However, if you have a crossbite or a deep bite, you might require another option for dental bridges.
4. Cantilever Bridges
When there is only one anchor tooth available for supporting the dental bridge, a cantilever bridge is the best option for filling the missing tooth gap. Saving money and time, cantilever bridges can work well if designed for the front teeth.
A good dentist will always consider the biting force when designing a cantilever bridge. The bridge is not suitable for use in the back tooth as a lot of bite force will be put on the abutment tooth.
5. Traditional Bridges
They are the most popular dental bridges used for restoring lost teeth when you have natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap. They are lightweight and provide excellent chewing comfort by distributing the normal bite force evenly along the jawbone.
If you maintain an optimum level of dental hygiene at home, these implants can last a long time. However, a lot of enamel will be removed from the abutment teeth and they will need to be protected by well-fitted crowns.
What Is The Procedure For A Dental Bridge?
Firstly, we try to understand your aims of replacing the missing teeth and discuss all the suitable options with you. Your dentist at Imogen Dental will take some impressions and photographs of your teeth to ensure a very natural result.
During your visit to our Benson or Kingsclere Dental Practice, the adjacent teeth are trimmed down slightly to make room for their crowns. A mould is taken from this area and then used to create the crowns and bridge. At this stage, we’ll also determine the right shade for your bridge and you’ll be fitted with a temporary bridge to wear until your new one is ready.
The last visit will involve removing the temporary bridge and fitting the new one. We will check the fit and bite and make any necessary adjustments. Once we’re happy it fits well and delivers a good bite, we’ll cement it into place and you walk out a new you.
How Much Do Dental Bridges Cost?
Due to the many variables, the cost of Dental Bridges can vary;
- Complexity or difficulty of the placement
- Geographic location
- Materials used, such as zirconia, metal alloy covered in resin, or composite resin
- Number of teeth needed to fill the gap
- Additional treatments for other dental issues, like gum disease
The type of bridge that you select will further define the price. Please see our Fee Guide for estimated costs.
How Do I Care For My Dental Bridge?
Additional and regular oral hygiene care is required. If it is kept clean and provided there is no accidental damage, a bridge can last for many years. Your dentist or dental hygienist will recommend an appropriate home care regime.
You need to clean your bridge every day, to prevent problems such as bad breath and gum disease. You also have to clean under the false tooth every day. Your dentist or dental hygienist will show the most effective techniques to do this.
What Are The Alternatives?
Other alternatives to dental bridges include dental implants and dentures. When visiting our dental practice in Newcastle, your dentist will advise you on the treatment option appropriate for you.
